In 1762, the Earl of Sandwich sat at  table with his friends, gambling. it was lunchtime and he was hungry but he ddin't want to stop and have lunch:"Bring me some bread with some meat!" he said to his servant. And so the great sandwitch was born!
Today the sandwich is  the most popular lunch in the United States. Children take them to the school, families eat them on picni, office workers eat them in the office and  students eat them in the park. There are coffee shops, bars, restaurants and sandwich shops with an incredible variety of delicious sandwiches. There are even sandwich competitions.

So what is the secret of a good sandwich? " The bread and the ingredients must  be surper fresh". Says Chris Brown, maneger of the sandwich shop EAT. "There must be two or more ingredients, one dense, like cheese or meat, and the other light, like tomato. You must take the sandwich just before you want to eat  it, not three hours before. And  it's very important to uses your imagination. Two pieces of dry bread with some dry cheese between them is not a sandwich!"

They generally contain a combination of salad vegetables, meat, cheese, and a variety of sauces or savoury spreads. The bread can be used as it is, or it can be coated with any condiments to enhance flavour and texture. They are widely sold in restaurants and cafes. Several examples of unconventional sandwiches include tacos, burritos, and pizza.

1840 - The sandwich was introduced to America by Englishwoman Elizabeth Leslie (1787-1858). In her cookbook, Directions for  Cookery, she has a recipe for ham sandwiches that she suggested as a main dish.
Ham Sandwiches - Cut some thin slices of bread very neatly, having slightly buttered them; and, if your choose, spread on a very little mustard. Have ready some very thin slices of cold boiled ham, and lay one between two slices of bread. You may either roll them up, or lay them flat on the plates. They are used at supper or at luncheon.

1900’s - The sandwich became very popular in the American diet when bakeries started selling pre-sliced bread, thus making sandwiches very easy to create. Sandwiches became an easy, portable meal for workers and school children alike.
